You don't need to necessarily have flower in a composition to have a beautiful painting of leaves. These happen to be Hawaiian Ti leaves and I just love how the sunlight comes through them in the morning and late afternoon. Fire oranges and reds mixed with greens and soft lavender shadows create a peaceful yet energized piece. My own garden is so lush and I take frequent breaks between working on paintings. I'll either go out into my backyard filled with tropical glories or I'll sit under my front lanai and peer out through the lush banana leaves. I'm always trying to face towards a sunlight cluster of leaves.

Lotus flowers live in my pond in the summer time. I just love this exotic beauty. In my studio, I also paint magnificent glass chandeliers with exotic and tropical themes and the lots flower is one of my favorite flowers to incorporate into these pieces. This painting here was inspired by the detail of the center part of the flower against the bring magenta and warm yellow and gold tones. I play to do some larger paintings in oil for a gallery show in San Francisco in November.

Red heliconia flowers are striking and exotic. It's funny because when I travel, I'm always looking for new flowers to paint even though I may have a lot of images of the same kind of flower. I just love the way the leaves position themselves in the compostition with the flower. And the way the sunlight comes through is just breath taking. When I'm painting a flower, I'm look to make the color rich. I'm also looking for flowers that are kissed by the sun.

It's really fun for me to travel with watercolors. They are spontaneous and capture water and the movement of the ocean beautifully. This is one of my most favorite scenes on Kauai and I feel like it really has a "vintage" feeling and fittingly, it's the beach directly across from the historic Coco Palms resort.
